Winemaking in the Vineyard: Chardonnay

The Winemaking in the Vineyard enology session looks at canopy management in the vineyard and the impacts different approaches to leafing have on finished wine. During the 2023 growing season, on behalf of the OWB, Lingua Franca Vineyard and Winery implemented a commercial scale trial utilizing different treatments of common practice approaches to leaf pulling and timing on Chardonnay. The trial was overseen in the vineyard by Lingua Franca Vineyard Manager Brandon Hassart and in the winery by Associate Winemaker Kim Abrahams. They will present the wines for tasting and will walk us through the science of the different approaches and the data the trial was able to generate. The goal of this session is to start a conversation on winemaking decisions that start in the vineyard to produce the highest quality crop in ever evolving and shifting growing seasons.

Pinot Gris Juice Fining

This seminar explores different techniques and technologies utilized in fining pinot gris juice . We will dive into the chemical interactions of common fining products with guest speaker, Dr. Stephan Sommer - Assistant Extension Professor and State Extension Specialist for Enology at University of Missouri and joined by an esteemed panel of Oregon Winemakers that will share their fining protocols. There is a wine tasting with this session that is provided by the respective winemaking panel.
